Yes they do look very funny. We should all make fun of the obese when possible. It can be used as motivation to those hippos so they can stop eating so much and start watching what goes in their vacuums (mouths) and they can also start walking more (no, walking from the couch to the kitchen and back does NOT count..)

Woahhh.... 1 in 100 people die during this operation?! ... And it's the most common operation performed for weight loss?? So then how many people exactly have these surgeons killed...? Maybe I'm just not that familiar with surgery stats, but I'm just shocked at how this operation is allowed to be done with such a high chance of death (and probably a much higher chance of 'complications').

If you give them bad habit they're going to follow this on throughout their adulthood too. Fair enough if parents have tried helping their child. It's their family after all, and who says that these parents don't try? some obviously don't but you can't control family life. The energy required to make her fat must come from somewhere, unless her body is very efficient on a low fat diet and is able to make fat from low calorie food somehow, or the air she breathes is turned into fat. My thinking is that she was active started a stressfull desk job, stopped exercising and snacked alot while her metabolism tanked, cushings may play a part but its not the whole story.

How do you know? Scientists don't even know why people overeat. But they do know there is a hormone or two (or more) that regulate the "feeling full". I suspect that one day in the near future, there will be a genetic/hormonal/biological component discovered that will provide a lot of answers about why folks overeat and get obese.

I have cushing's and had every symptom including a 110 lbs weight gain. I have been to 25 drs only to be given more and more restrictions on my diet until I was hospitalized for malnutrition and dehydration! I even had an Endocrinologist refuse to check me because "it is just so rare." I am now in early organ failure and have to have surgery. It is hard to face that I probably won't see my youngest graduate from high school because I was an assumed overeater! Cushing's is real and can be fatal!

I think your reply is based on ignorance. I am 4'11" and 217lbs. I am currently being treated at mayo clinic in Mn for cushing's disease. I eat 600 calories a day for over 5 years and had my drs assume that I was lying about my eating habits too. I am extremely active and exercise 3 hours per day with a very restrictive diet. I was hospitalized for malnutrition and dehydration due to my low calorie diet! You don't have it and are ignorant to it. You should apologise for your ignorance.

can anyone help me out? Since I was 8, I started disforming, while eating the same, active kid, etc. But my limbs are skinny. CHICKEN LEGS. But all the fat is on my torso. I always had a fat stomach, fat wide back. At 14 I got the "buffalo hump", and my family used to make fun of me. Now I'm thinner, I'm 5'1 weigh 118, BUT my waist is 32 inches! my chest is 36, and hips 37. Is it possible that I have Cushing's Syndrome?

The way that "food" is made now as upposed to all natural in the 1900's has a big affect on a lot of things. I have Cushing's and I can tell you from personal experience that it is possible to eat 1000-1500 calories a day of organic healthy food and work out for an hour AND STILL GAIN WEIGHT. I had a tumor on my pituitary--- now you tell me how that is my fault?! While I did not gain as much as this poor woman, I did gain a lot for my body type. I agree that many people do eat there way to obesity but hormonal disorders are not the fault of those who have the bad luck of being sick.

I believe that staying slim should be very admired because it shows self respect. Our bodies are not designed to be unhealthily heavy. Luckily, my dad is a vegan, my mom only eats chicken and fish as meats, and has a low sugar/sodium diet, my sister and I are vegetarians and eat low calorie foods, and we do some sort of exercise and yoga every night. Diet programs don't work unless you take the effort. That's what I did and I lost want I didn't need. I'm still on the way to losing some more but overall you have to keep going no matter what. A cure for weight loss doesn't come in a pill. The only treatment for weight loss is patience and dedication.

@scruethedemiurge: Interestingly in modern Western society thinness is considered "attractive" because it is recognized as a sign of good health, which is itself a sign of prosperity (as obesity rates tend to rise among the poor, who are now more inclined towards a "fast food" culture). Whereas in other cultures - parts of Africa for instance - being overweight is considered a sign of wealth, as it shows you can afford to eat well. The same used to be true in Britain 300 years ago.

We live in a culture of fast food, TV, motorized transport, and office work. It's no mystery why 1/3 of adults are obese, and 1/3 overweight. These are exactly the kind of people one would expect a society like ours to produce. The reason thin people are so admired is because their thinness shows that, in that respect, they've consciously, deliberately made of themselves the kind of people they want to be, not passively let themselves become whatever their social environment would make of them.

I´m counting chalories. Its not as hard as it sounds. You can still eat normal portions, if you choose the right food. I eat everything, but just a little bit of everything. And I exercise every day, but just a little. I have still lost more than 10 kg in 3 months. I´m still overweight, but no longer obese. There are no shortcuts. If you want to lose weight you have to change your lifestyle. But it doesnt have to be that hard.

Its so easy for you to sit back and say this. If you have never been overweight, you probably dont understand that its something that is not a simple matter of diet and exercise. There are a lot of thin people who eat much more than I do and never exercise. I exercise every day and I have changed my eating habits. While I have lost weight, I am still very overweight. i dont think someone 20 lbs overweight is obese. I realize it may be technically obese, but Im sorry it isnt. To me obese is when someone is 75 lbs or more overweight. Thats how they used to define it before all of this BMI non sense.

I wouldn't say it's full of misinformation. I've lost over 90 lbs by watching calories and 30 mins of cardio 5x a week. It wasn't hard either, very easy and I still eat whatever I want. I feel WAY more healthy too.

Soft drinks contain over 100 calories per 12 ounces(1 can).. Beer, Wine, Juice and milk can contain just as much if not more calories as well. If you're body has an excess amount of calories then it will store whatever you eat (whether its vegetables, whole wheat grains, sunflower seeds, top salmon, fresh chicken) and turn it INTO fat. It's better to have healthy diet, but losing weight can be done simply by watching calories. Exercise helps too, but it doesn't have to be complicated either

If you could only afford to eat McD's I would imagine that no matter how much you exercised you would still put on unhealthy weight from your unhealthy food source. I'm overweight and I lost 50+ pounds (may be of help I'm a vegetarian of four years) by just eating what a vege can, and going out with my friends all the time. You don't have to "exorcise", simply walking out with friends helps with a good diet! Soon as winter hit, I moved to the middle of no where, had to drive everywhere I needed to be, and gained back 15 pounds (shitty) Therefore proving, diet & "exorcise" DOES TO HELP!!

Thanks for yor reply. This is encouraging. Actually I am 24 and weigh 83 kgs. I tried his yoga for 1 mth and followed the medication & yoga for 45 min/day. I didn't find much difference. On the other hand I got neck pain and am not able to come out of that. Perhaps it could be bcos of someother reason I want to give 1 more chance and do sincerly this time. hi there, i did this for a few days only and noticed a difference in my core muscle that it always stays tight and not lose....and that is the aim of reducing the weight of ur stomach....try doing situps and go for walks and try to take warm water with a spoon of honey everyday and then see a difference....i started to lose upto 1 - 2 kgs a week....this was by intense cardio, yoga and healthy eating!!! i hope this has helped...if u need to know anything else do feel free to ask!!!

If your kid is obese, you should have them tested for hormone deficiency. But you also have to look at how they're eating: 1. Are they eating breakfast? 2. Are they eating enough during the day? 3. Are they so hungry by the time school is done that they raid the fridge the minute they get home? 4. Do you keep junk food in the house? 5. Do you serve foods that are high in fat, carbs, and salt? 6. Do the kids have sit-down dinners, or do they have to eat in the car?

Some people react to stress differently. Some people go home and eat sweets, others go home and drink alcohol, others smoke, Overeating is any worse than someone smoking or someone drinking. It's so hard to avoid sugar because about every food has sugar in it. Organic food is more expensive, and eating healthy costs more so no wonder there are more overweight people. I'm surprised I'm still thin. I just don't eat much food is all and I don't eat much sweets even though I love them.

You can do work outs in your home. Sit ups, leg ups, lift some heavy objects as weight lifting, push ups. I would recommend buying Seventeen magazines, they sometimes have a page in there about work outs you can do in your home.

Im trying to use some of the interview information in a courseowork essay I am writing as part of my degree. I was wondering if anyone knew which station this was broadcast from, which part of the US it was broadcast from and if this interview is part of a TV programme or a series or something? any additional information would be helpful! I have seen both sides and I can say that obese people need more medical attention, fight constantly against 'normal weight' attitutes and it just gets on everybody's nerves. When I was obese, I believe I concentrated more on what others thought than on my own goals. If obese people are happy then why do they constantly complain? Getting fat is just a result of another problem; life style, hard times, emotional distress. Concentrate on solving the real problem.
