@hadr0n The main thing about dietitians is they have to know how to make mashed potato sandwiches, open cans of grey-green peas, and cook leather and onions - I mean LIVER and onions.
By: markgg1. on 23 Jul 10, 12:23:29
@technoway I mean the more I look into it the more silly it becomes. the calender for example. As a kid I thought 'jesus must be real cause of the years BC and AD correspond to his death' and than I actually read up on how the years got created. Religious people will do any desperate ploy to make others believe. I might start my own calender. Its 20 AM (after Markgg1)
By: markgg1. on 23 Jul 10, 12:21:26
@technoway The mere fact god cannot test god must make you suspicious surely? If you cannot experience god in any form whatsoever except imagination, doesnt it make you think 'hmmmm, perhaps god is bullshit' The only reason Christianity is so popular is because it sent its armies all over the place and you were converted or killed. The spanish used it as a tool to conquer south american, and the Europeans used it to subjugate africans. The pilgrims spread it to the USA. this is historical fact
By: markgg1. on 23 Jul 10, 12:18:36
@technoway Im at university so well aware wikipedia isnt an academic source, but mose people agree it is a good general guide of events. I cant be bothered to read ten books on the history of a guy called Jesus whose life I have little interest in., You design an experiment that disproves that I am infact god secretly pretending to be a normal british man, and in 50 yearsd I will end the world and only take Arsenal supporters to heaven. The argument is so poor it annoys me when I hear it.
By: technoway. on 23 Jul 10, 09:00:48
@technoway Oops, meant 30 AD there, not 300 BC!
By: technoway. on 23 Jul 10, 08:58:31
@markgg1 Not at all. Randomized double blind studies show that specific homeopathic remedies are no better than placebos. You cannot test God. And, anyone can write at Wikipedia. Real history comes from academia, not there! Wikipedia is not accepted for reference citations in academic papers for that reason. I believe in God because for specific reasons, including recorded history. And, i also believe in evolution.
By: technoway. on 23 Jul 10, 08:53:57
@markgg1 Not at all - randomized double blind studies show that specific homeopathic remedies are statistically no better with placebos. Design an experiment to prove God does not exist. Read the letters from 300 BC, and use a real source. Anyone can write at Wikipedia. Schools won't accept it for references! I believe in God because I know science, and extrapolate what I know of that and what I know of history, and more - running out of characters here. I believe in evolution too.

what's that last punchline: 'you look like _____'?
By: ratholin. on 20 Jul 10, 05:32:43
@burntogold "Legal Secretary Certification: Legal secretary certification is voluntary, but highly recommended because many employers require it. Legal secretaries or law office managers who have completed an approved paralegal training course or have one year's experience can take an exam to become an Accredited Legal Secretary (ALS)."
By: ratholin. on 20 Jul 10, 05:31:22
@burntogold meanwhile a criminal law jobsite has this to say. " Legal Secretary Education: While there are no academic requirements for this field, taking a 2-year associate's degree program or a 1-to-2 semester certificate program in legal secretary skills will help you prepare for the complexities of legal practice. Most legal secretary programs cover law office practices, keyboarding, computers, word processing, legal terminology and law." Not all certificates are legally protected.
By: burntogold. on 20 Jul 10, 04:36:28
@burntogold Actually, I was wrong - there IS protected certification in the UK. "City and Guilds, in association with ILEX, offers the UK's leading range of nationally and internationally approved qualifications for Paralegals and Legal Secretaries, which have been taken by over 20,000 people. They offer the Level 2 Certificate/Diploma for Legal Secretaries and a Level 3 Certificate/Diploma for Legal Secretaries qualification. The level 3 qualification is equivalent to A-level standards. "
By: burntogold. on 20 Jul 10, 04:34:11
@ratholin Uhm... even wikipedia knows this one. Look up both Legal Secretary and Paralegal. Means the same as "paralegal" does in the UK / Internationally. True, there's no specific certification for it unless you count the one from Pitman Training, but by a basic definition one should have completed pre-law. Similarly, anyone can claim to be a violinist - don't need a specific degree or certification there, but if they haven't had the training, they're going to sound like crap.
By: ratholin. on 19 Jul 10, 09:31:13
@burntogold legal secretary is also an unprotected term so your argument means squat.
By: burntogold. on 19 Jul 10, 03:28:35
@ratholin a) That term is spelled dietitian and dietitians, not deititions. b) Just because people call themselves something doesn't mean they are. I know of a receptionist who calls herself a "legal secretary" just because she managed phones and appointment books at a law firm once. Obviously not the same thing. Anyone can claim to be anything and be lying through their teeth to sound fancy.
By: ratholin. on 19 Jul 10, 00:18:57
@burntogold Nutritional science is a complex study and people who complete a degree in it are called dietitions. Nutritionist is an unprotected sciencey sounding word though. For instance many private chefs add nutritionist to their job description, as most cooking schools require a one semester course in nutritional science, just a revisit of the highschool health class really. Personal trainers often claim the title but are in fact selling herbal supplements and fad diets on commission.
By: hadr0n. on 17 Jul 10, 15:45:35
@burntogold I wasn't having a go at GMU. I'm just trying to drive home the distinction between nutritionists and dietitions. Nutritionists require no training whatsoever and the vast majority of them are quacks, whereas dietitions (the people nutritionists pretend to be) need at least a BSc and hundreds of hours of supervision before they can be licenced for practice.

Get in the fucking sack!
By: burntogold. on 17 Jul 10, 15:44:30
@burntogold For more on how we can "officially" name things oddly over here and still be serious about them - you'd probably say a "therapist" could be anyone and a "psychologist" is protected. Over here, BOTH must have a license by the American Psychological Association to legally practice, and the primary difference is that while one has a Doctorate and does original research, the other has a Masters Degree and is trained in established work but does nothing new themselves. Also, paychecks...

@hadr0n I know you can get Dotorates in silly things in America. GMU is not one of those schools. We're not Princeton, Yale, or Harvard, no, but we've got more international students than domestic ones, and have some of the best research in the states going on, particularly in neurology and green technology. We've attracted world class individuals to our faculty and have state of the art equipment in our labs. We wouldn't have the status we do if we didn't know psudoscience from the real thing.
