I had my Gallbladder removed on the 14th Jan 09 due to Gallstones. I was really scared about it all, but to be honest if you're in as much pain as I was with the attacks. It's really worth it! Bit of pain afterwards because of the staples, but mine is healing well. Good luck :)

WOW I sure am glad I was asleep during this.I had mine taken out in September on a Thursday and was supposed to have it taken out at 12:00 but I didn't have it taken out til' 5:00 but good news being I don't have pain waking me up every night anymore ^-^

Oh he told me that was the case but I was a unique case. It turns out I had two bile ducts connected to my Gall Bladder. So he told me to be on the safe side he out the drain in. They emptied over 900cc's a day from that thing. Uber gross!

Why not have two 10mm ports and two 5mm ports - that way you don't need to retract the camera from the 10mm port and put a smaller 5mm camera in to one of the other ports. Also, why wasn't the GB placed in a bag? It would take very little pressure to burst the GB, resulting in bile release.

I am an O.R. Nurse and just had my first laparoscopy (as well as my first surgery ever!). I was scared but understood the surgery. This video provided a great overview of the procedure, and was pretty darn accurate. Thanks for making this video, and for the other viewers responses. I had the operation 40 days ago. Absolutely no pain whatsoever from the incisions a bit of shoulder pain the day after that lasted for 24h but was nothing to worry about. No side effects, went to work 2 days after the operation. Ate light for like a month after the op and I am now back to eating everything I used to. Overall, best decision I ever made was to get rid of a malfunctioning gall bladder that could lead to very severe problems. Good luck to all remember to pick experienced doctor.

I had the surgery 2 days ago. Not so bad as I expected.Of course you are soar but I already switched from percocet to Ibufrofen and walking around. So far so good. Don't get youself be caught in the horror stories , they create unecessary anxiety,everybody is different .

I just had this done on Wednesday, 3days ago, and so far I am feeling ok, I AM sore most at the xyphoid process just underneath my left breast. I take the pain pills religiously every 6 hrs and stool softeners along with prunes. My throat hurt so bad after surgery that I chose to buy some Werthers candies that help alot. LOTS of ice water, ice pack on the belly, and rest. Don't forget to eat soft or liquid diet for poops sakes. The first time was a killer man!

I had mine out 4 days ago and it almost feels like it never happened. Getting out of a chair or bed is ever so slightly difficult. I think having my impacted wisdom teeth out was worse and even that wasn't so awful. But I am glad I waited until AFTER I had mine out before I watched this video. If you are having it done soon there is nothing to fear... except maybe the bill if you are self insured.

@lperlich thanks man I had it last september the gas pains were bad after that but about time I got over this surgery, I had to have a colon resection they took out 21 inches of my colon. After that surgery I realized the the gall bladder surgery wasnt that bad.

@Screamer2440 For me....the worst part is the pain you feel before the surgery! I finally had an attack so severe it sent me to the ER. I was tested at another health clinic for gallstones a few months prior with "inconclusive" results. Turns out I really did have them and had to be operated on immediately. You will be very sore for a few days after. But trust me, it's nothing compared to a gallbladder attack! Good luck!

There is NOTHING to be afraid of. It's so simple. I was mostly afraid of being put asleep...didn't even know they did it. I had mine removed Moday (today is Friday). I'm all ready weening myself to half a dose of my pain killers and I put in half a day of work today. Some people go back a couple days later, some people a week later. The procedure itself was painless though as you're under a general anesthesia.

Had one of these done 2 days ago it was my first surgical operation ever and i was terrified I didn't even get out of bed for the first day afterward. Once I did though I realized that most of the pain was in my head anyway and that it was nothing compared to the blinding pain that had brought me to the hospital to begin with. Now only to days later I have only mild discomfort that a few percocets take care of without a problem. Modern medicine is great!!

WOW! This is amazing to see, because I just had this very same procedure performed on me yesterday morning, at around 5 am. I have three small cuts in my abdomen to prove it. :-) But they are not causing much discomfort if I don't stretch or bend too much. I was released from the hospital by 7 PM that evening, as I was already walking around and feeling much better. I plan to be back at work the following Monday morning, as it is healing well and I am having no complications.

The doctor is cauterizing the area. Basically to stop too much blood from flowing. Its kind of like welding the tissue together? He burns the area to close the veins so bleeding isn't so extreme and infections are less likely to happen.

i had my appendix removed about 2 weeks ago. i started walking around 2 hours after i woke up. though i stayed in the hospital for 3 days before i got discharged. and i didn't even need any of the medicine of pain because i really didn't feel any pain. after a week a\of my discharge i was already walking and even running. i had one scar around my pubes, one on the left side of my waist (which i really don't get because the appendix is in my right side) and one on my bellybutton.

July 19, 2010 for me. My spleen was actually 6cm enlarged. It was 17 cm big. My surgeon removed my spleen with a nail size hole, he chopped it up in a bag and removed it piece by piece. He is a very clean and nice job. LOL! I dropped to 3 grams of hemoglobin/dL during the surgery. LOL! I was given 2 units of RBC in 2 hours, fastest transfusion of my life. LOL

My Dr. does not do this procedure. I plan to have the lap band and should have a sugery date as soon as insurance has responded favorably (4-5 weeks). My daughter in law is an emergency room physician; she and my son had the roux-n-y a couple of years ago and are doing just great, however, she stated if she were to do it again, she would get the sleeve procedure. Can you explain why this might be a better choice?

Few coments: how do you meassure how wide is your sleeve, we use a 46 fr buie at my practice, in stomachs with much fat around them is very difficult to just do it by feeling, and I´ll think you are leaving too wide sleeves in those cases, but your results will say. Going with the stapler to the spleen leaves a very wide opening in the stomach, we usually point the stapler to the Hiss angle. Running sutures is very easy to do and will get more hemosthasis than clips.

A lot of it is opinion and the experiences of many surgeons expressed at meetings, but there was a study several years ago by Shikora, et al. It may have been published in a journal, may have been presented at a meeting. There are always differences of opinion, and as with all operations, there is more than *one* way to do it. As long as it's not recognized as a way *not* to do it! :-)

Oversewing a staple line can actually make the leak rate higher, since it can jeopardize the blood supply to the staple line. In more than ten years of doing these staple lines laparoscopically I've not ever had a staple line break down and start leaking, so I'm not eager to change what I'm doing. There are many other surgeons using clips as well.

I understand your concern. I use bipolar cautery to reduce this risk. The current goes between the jaws of the instrument instead of through the patient's body to the grounding pad. I size the VSG with a 32 Fr. bougie, which makes the sleeve very narrow. Oversewing it might make it too narrow. Endostitch is a clever but expensive unnecessary gadget that would jack up the price of the surgery.

Thanks for your comments. Most patients stay for 2 days, though some do go home after one. Pain is rarely the cause of delayed discharge; usually it is prolonged nausea. I don't know why you had so much pain.

I just had this operation myself and don't know who goes home within 24 hours! I was in hospital for a week and on pain relief for 6 days of that. It is a fantastic aid for obese people though and well worth the small amount of pain for the wonderful gains.

Very nice procedure. The only comment is the use of electrocautery right upon the staple line at the end of the procedure. Some people believe that this is not a safe technique because the current can travel along the metal staples causing tissue necrosis in this area with a following leak. I think that it would be better to cover this place by a running seromuscular suture with EndoStitch.

I feel like such a dumbass for worrying. My mom's surgery was a complete success (thank you Dr. Morin Hanson at DePaul. You totally rock!) & she was well taken care of. Of course, after any surgery, there is a healing process. My mom is feeling some pain where the incisions were made, but she's coming along fine. I had this surgery done on the 24th of March, 9 days ago.. I was walking the 2nd day, and by the 4th day they sent me home. I have been walking around and feeling well, Going to the bathroom is a slight challenge, but everyone is different. Pain was tough at first, but getting better each day. SO far, not regretting it. Had diverticulitis and needed it gone! I am 30, I am recovering fast. Eating, going to the bathroom, ect.. Dont be too freaked.. You'll make it :)

Also, I was in Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, which is a top-notch facility. In no way am I trying to discourage people from getting this procedure done, however -- if you need surgery, please consider this as an option, rather than traditional open surgery, which entails more pain and recovery time than laparoscopy, and leaves worse scarring (I've seen the terrible abdominal scars my mother has from several such surgeries).

I had a laparoscopic colon resection almost exactly 2 years ago. I just want to inform everyone that while it is true that most people recover significantly more quickly with this method than traditional surgery, complications can arise. I was 19 at the time and otherwise fairly healthy, but I was in the hospital for 11 days, as opposed to the usual 3 days, because before you leave you have to be able to eat without throwing up, and I wasn't able to do that.

Thanks for your comment. I missed the Manipal meeting because of another commitment. Pratap Kumar is a good friend of mine. I do not use clips for my lymphadenectomy just diathemy of all lymphathic channels. I have not experienced any collection of lymphatics. I was at the AAGL in Washington in Nov 2007 and I learned that using harmonics to seal lymphatics causes minimal lymph leak. I have started using harmonics for my lymph node dissection now. Selva
